Most people don't realize it, but many of the clothes we buy new still have the chemicals from the dyes, industrial cleaning agents and other products that are used in the preparation of a garment present in the fabric. That fabric is then in direct contact with our skin - the largest organ in the human body - and we absorb the chemicals and other agents and they enter directly into our blood stream. This can cause allergic reactions and other harmful long-term effects, not to mention increasing our daily contact with toxic substances.
There is a lot of misinformation around the apparel industry. Just like our fruit and vegetables, we are told that without chemicals and pesticides the crop yield for cotton and other natural materials will be low, however, this is not the case. Organic crops are perfectly resistant. Organic methods also protect the workers who pick the cotton from coming in contact with harmful substances and garment workers with treatments like petroleum scours, bleach, heavy metals, flame and soil retardants, ammonia and formaldehyde.
