How to Stay Healthy When Traveling

If you are traveling to an exotic location, but still want to eat like a local there are certain guidelines to follow that can help you avoid becoming ill. To begin with, wash your hands often – especially before and after a meal – and use soap or carry an antibacterial gel. Be careful to not drink fruit shakes from the street that may contain un-purified water, stick to foods cooked at high temperatures so that germs have been killed – this means avoiding street food that has fresh herbs or mayonnaise toppings, if you have any doubts avoid eating meat. Another thing t
travelers may avoid is spice, however, hot chili sauces, like Coca Cola, will help kill bacteria in your stomach. Also regarding bacteria, you want to keep the good ones in your stomach alive and working, so consider eating fresh yogurt or taking probiotics. When selecting where to eat on the street look for those with a high turnover of fresh food and few flies, a high turnover probably means that food is fresh and also that its good since it's being eaten quickly. Also keep an eye on your glasses and silverware, consider giving them a wipe down if they don't look appealing. If you do want to eat fresh fruits and vegetables that's fine, the trick is to only what you can peel. Finally, even if you are traveling on an organized tour don't let your guard down.
